Hi Reader,
I met a mom at the dog park this week, and she said something that made me so happy, "I think my ADHD as a kid was trauma related."
Seriously though, the amount of people walking around with unhealed childhood and adult wounds is so sad; nothing about it makes me happy.
What excites me is that she is aware there's more to her story than what she's been told. And she values herself and her daughter's well-being enough to start doing some digging.
She told me that since her tour in Afghanistan, she's suffered from PTSD and went on meds for about ten years. The medicine didn't help, so she stopped taking meds and tried therapy instead.
She's doing talk therapy, and although it can work for some people, and we all have to start somewhere...
Most of our issues cannot be fixed by talking about them- we must reconnect with ourselves by learning what we feel in our bodies and what emotions come up as we deal with things in our daily life.
Then, when we know what we're dealing with, we can use different techniques to release those feelings.
I told her a little about somatic therapy and got lost trying to explain it all, so I suggested she get The Body Keeps the Score.
It's an excellent start for anyone working through emotional, mental, and/or physical issues-- but I feel she can especially relate to it as the author talks a lot about his work with veterans suffering from PTSD.
She seemed really hopeful and said she would pick it up right away. I hope it helps her.
Many of us think since we haven't been to war, or maybe we don't have it as bad as this person or that person, our hurts couldn't possibly cause the anxiety, depression, addiction, exhaustion...that we experience.
Don't be fooled! You didn't have to leave the country and go to war to have experienced trauma. Many of us grew up on the battlefield at home, whether it was apparent or more of silent warfare.
You must validate your suffering if you want to heal.
Then you can begin to start creating the life that you want.
That's why I love The Body Keeps the Score; it shows us that it's about how our bodies react to the stress that causes our emotional issues, not so much the event itself.
